There are many reasons why it might be time to remove a tree from your property, such as
Rot or disease can weaken a tree to the point where removal is necessary to prevent failure.
While we prefer to trim rather than remove to promote a great view, unfortunately, there are times when removal is the only option.
Roots that are damaging sidewalks or water lines
Sometimes roots grow into and break sewer or water lines, or cause uplifting to portions of sidewalk. We are often called in when a sewer line scope or real estate inspection reveals this is the case, requiring the removal of the problematic tree(s) to prevent further damage
To promote the growth of other plants or trees
All plants need appropriate levels of light and space to grow well. When necessary, we remove trees to provide ideal conditions which allow for other plants and trees to thrive
Getting too close to power or communication lines
To prevent issues, especially during heavy weather, it is important to maintain proper clearance between trees and power/communication lines. It is also important to do this in a safe way to avoid damage or injury, which is where our trained tree service team comes in. Often trimming will solve the issue, but sometimes removal is required
While each of our customer’s circumstances is different, there are a few sets of options for tree removal that we commonly provide our Durham customers.
Standard Durham Tree Removal Service
Our standard removal includes bringing a tree to the ground, disposal of limbs, and cutting larger-diameter logs to 16″ lengths for firewood that will be left on site. If you choose, we can remove the wood for an additional cost or leave the larger diameter logs at longer lengths, which you can cut down to firewood size.
Down-Only Tree Removal
Down-only tree removal consists of safely taking the tree down either in one or multiple pieces. There is no cleanup, firewood cutting, or limb removal. This option is the least expensive and the perfect fit for the budget-conscious property owner who has the capacity to cut and clean up the mess on their own.
Low-Impact Tree Removal
Tree felling can be used when there is adequate free space, but low-impact tree removal is required when the setting has features that must be protected underneath the tree, such as manicured lawns, sidewalks, and valuable plants. In this process, tree parts are cut and lowered in manageable pieces to the ground in such a way as to ensure there is no damage.
Permits for Durham Tree Removal
Are you concerned about the process for tree removal permits? Unsure what permits or other authorization may be required? Permits are required for much of the work that we perform. We can obtain these permits or assist in the process as an additional service to our customers.

What People Online Are Saying About Our Durham Tree Removal Service
"Response was timely, estimate was reasonable, employees were courteous, knowledgeable and efficient. Work was to specifications, advice for further preventative work was appreciated and clean up was beyond expectation. Would definitely use again and recommend." – Marcy
"This January, they removed two large cottonwood trees along our property line; one from our yard and one in our neighbor’s yard. They arrived as scheduled and were efficient and skilled despite the cold east wind. They did a great job on the cleanup as well. Nice people." – Gayle
"I've never posted a review, much less a 5-star review. But here's the deal: office staff was super when I called to schedule an estimate. Estimator was friendly and knowledgeable. Estimate was the lowest of three. The guys who came to cut down the tree were friendly and OMG THEY CUT THAT TREE DOWN SO FAST. Guy who came to grind out the stump explained exactly what he was doing and did a great job. And office staff was great when it was time to pay the bill (which was cheaper than the estimate). So, five stars easy, would gladly use Rich's again." – Matthew
"We have asked them out twice. 1st time was to remove 8 full grown arborvitae which was $400 (included clean up) and then to prune our 30-40ft maple tree ($250 to remove 1/3 of the tree). We have always found their prices reasonable. They provide free quote which is very hard to come by these days. They do the work promised and are never late. We haven't had to be there for either of the jobs and we were very impressed. Will always use Rich's Tree Service for any tree/hedge needs. 5 stars." – Riley
"This is the third time I have used this service and they came through with flying colors once again. I not only received a call the day before the crew was to arrive as well as the morning of the appointment, the crew also called me when they were actually headed to my house. Prior notifications are very important to me. When the two-man crew arrived, I walked them through the back yard confirming what needed to be done. Within two hours they cleared out two dead dogwood trees, a large bush by the back fence and a dead portion of a remaining tree trunk. They also cut back some very long limbs on a tree that is close to my house and cleared out all the dead limbs that could cause future problems. There was also a small pile of cut logs that they removed for me as well. Then they neatly picked up all the debris and finished cleaning with a leaf blower. The yard was cleaner than when they started! I was very pleased with their professionalism, quick work, and thoroughness in completing all the jobs as I had requested. Their pricing is always reasonable and they make sure that they completely understand what the customer wants. I will continue to use this company for future projects as they really are top notch in their field of service." – Angie’s List Reviewer
"Rich's Tree Service is fantastic, and I have been a huge fan for 15 years. Their customer service is outstanding. Rich came out the day after I called to request an estimate, and he won me over on his first visit. He was extremely personable and thorough as he educated me on the needs of my trees and made his recommendations for their care. I had a few other companies bid for the job but they didn't give me the same confident feeling. The office staff are friendly, responsive and professional from scheduling through their follow-up call. Even the crew who come out are always a pleasure to work with, and they definitely know their trade as skilled arborists. And while I am a stickler for details, I am always impressed and pleased with the end results. They each take great pride in their work and it shows. One of the first projects that I hired Rich's for, was to remove and grind the stumps of a few problematic trees. They did all this while I was at work which speaks to my confidence in them. And except for the trees being gone, there was no sign that anyone had been there. Their cleanup is always impeccable." – Tony
