Winter weather can strike us with wind, snow, rain, and ice at any time in the Northwest. Typically when we get snow or ice that hits the Valley floor all of Portland seems to go out of service. We will sit at home glued to our televisions with anticipation of what this storm will bring and how it’s affecting the different areas of our community.
Ice can be very harsh on trees. During the winter months, the trees are dormant and very brittle. If a storm brings ice then damage to the tree or your property can occur. It is important not to try and remove the ice from the tree. In doing so you may cause more damage to the tree. Pruning in the fall can help reduce any injury due to a storm.
After a storm hits there are a few things you can look at to see if a tree service professional is needed:
- Was the tree healthy prior to the storm?
- Has any portion of the crown been lost?
- Are there any broken limbs or branches?
- Are there any cracks in the wood?
- Is the tree leaning?
Hiring a Certified Arborist to come evaluate your trees can help assess the damage a storm incurred on a tree.
